It should be more apparent now, than in the history of the sport, that golf training on at least three levels, is imperative for not only professional players, but as much for avid amateurs and weekend specialists. And to benefit the specific needs of golfers, golf training has been specialized to focus on three areas: Golf Instruction Training, Golf Medical Training and Golf Fitness Training. The value of specialized golf training is realized in the results a golfer sees from the each area of focus.

Golf Fitness Training

Contrary to popular belief, Golf Fitness is not an oxymoron analogous to jumbo shrimp. The influx of youth and their success on the professional tour is indicative of the transition of many young adults from more traditional sports like baseball, hockey and lacrosse, to a sport that can be played throughout their adult life. Yet, there is certainly some understandable confusion as to what Golf Fitness Training entails. Fitness professionals like certified personal trainers from American Council on Exercise bring a base foundation of practical exercises and stretching techniques to training sessions. But clients may enjoy even more defined success with instruction from a trainer certified by an agency like the Titleist Performance Institute or Hole In One Pilates. To best describe the role of a Golf Fitness Trainer, it can be compared against that of a traditional Golf Pro. And where as a Golf Pro handles technique for accuracy and consistency, Golf Fitness Training should result in greater distance and reduction, elimination and/or prevention of pain, resulting from the golfer's swing physical limitations. Additionally, Golf Fitness Training has as a goal, training the golfer's body to be able to repeat a proper swing from hole 1, through hole 18. In turn, sessions from a Golf Fitness Instructor work in unison with a Golf Pro.

To that end most golfers inevitably ask what order they should undertake golf training. Ideally, Golf Fitness Training would be conducted in conjunction with Golf Instruction/Lessons Training. The two biggest obstacles for Golf Training are time management and individual goal setting. Fortunately, Golf Training from a certified personal trainer or golf pro can help a golfer budget time and establish realistic time frames for noticeable improvement. So to define a rule would be inconsistent with the very nature of the fluidity of golf… consistency in both forms of training, combined with consistent communication between trainers and golfer are the keys to success.

Golf Medical Training

Simply put, golf is a ballistic sport. Played in a consistently leisurely fashion, it's an activity to be enjoyed for a many years, without much consideration of injury; however, whether the result of golf, another sport, or simply getting older, injuries may occur, causing golf to be less enjoyable or even fostering a desire to avoid the sport in its entirety. Typically, to remedy acute symptoms, or to assist in rehabilitative situations, therapy specialists are focusing on sport specific training methods to get golfers back on the course. Physical therapists are assisting individuals re-enter the golfing activity after procedures like knee and hip replacements, to spinal fusion and bone fractures.

Golf Instruction Training

Traditionally referred to as Golf Lessons, is typically performed by a Golf Pro. Accreditations by organization such as the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and Titleist Performance Institute promote proper instruction of grip, stance, club position and more. Golf instruction (golf lessons) is essential for proper technique of a swing across a broad range of club choice. The swing differences between a driver and 3-wood may be subtle, or rather pronounced, generally based on the ability of the golfer. Golf pros may even have the necessary golf experience to provide objective direction for golf club brand choice, grip type and footwear.

Golf Training

Golf Training in its various forms can work synergistically, to ensure a return on investment both in lower scores as well as golfer satisfaction. Whether an occasional hobby, regular activity, or challenging sport, a professional golf trainer should understand the needs of the individual player and ultimately foster a relationship that keeps the player engaged in golf and become even more, a larger and happier fan of this unique sport.

Titleist Performance Institute Golf Swing Philosophy…
We don't believe there is one way to swing a club; we believe there is an infinite number of ways to swing a club. But we do believe there is one efficient way for all golfers to swing a club and it is based on what the player can physically do.

PhysiCore Fit Tip:
No Pain, No Gain… it's a bit of a myth… As a fitness professional, I've heard this one for years. The problem with this myth is that it seems true. Most people, no matter how much education or experience they possess, have used post-exercise soreness as an indicator of a successful training session. We would typically tell ourselves, "I'm using muscles I haven't used in a while…. or… I worked out harder… or… I hit muscles in a different way." Unfortunately, even though those thought processes are true, it doesn't mean there's an actual causation between the degree of pain (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness - DOMS) and the amount of muscle used and built. Training at PhysiCore involves a focus on the fast-twitch muscle fibers used for explosive power in your golf swing and helps to avoid unnecessary muscle and connective tissue damage.
