Golf Training in the Off-Season
By Shawn M. Ramsey
Golf Training in the Off-Season
Today, for anyone who wants their golf game to either remain
consistent or even improve, there's little time to stop golf training.
Too many golfers end up 'hibernating' as a result of less course
time in the fall season. Short (one month), medium (three month)
and long term goals (six month) will increase the efficacy of
your golf training regimen. Assisted by certified golf training
professionals, you'll find motivation and the appropriate components
to a productive golf training program.
With so many golfers asking, "What should an off-season golf
training program encompass," it's understandable we've outlined
the fundamentals, with key points from a golf training specialist
below. Let the golf training professional in each category (Golf
Fitness Professional, Golf Instructional Professional, Golf Medical
Professional) direct you through the process in their discipline.
Here are the basics of an off-season Golf Training Program.
Golf Professional Lesson/Instruction
Now is the time to make some wholesale changes in your drive.
Now is the time to fine tune the putter. Are you able to do such
wholesale and granular approaches? Sure. It's a matter of time
management and goal setting, along with the Off-Season Three Club
Lesson golf training rule. With attention/ documentation to the
measured progression of form, distance and/or accuracy, focus
on golf lesson/ instructional training of two clubs, for a period
of three months. After that period, add another club, while continuing
'maintenance' golf lesson training (a term typically associated
with in-season fitness training) with your initial two clubs.
With this simple formula, at the end of the six month window,
you'll have mastered to your abilities to swing three clubs, which
could mean the difference between three bogeys or three pars in
your round.
Key Point: There are several types of practice
Skill to Skill, Theory to Practice and Training to competition.
We suggest a combination of these types in golf lesson training,
to maximize the engraining process and maintain a focused interest.
Note, this is the second inference to 'focus' that has been made.
The ability to focus on honing the skills per club, allow for
comfort, which leads to confidence, which leads to better play.
Golf Fitness Training
More and more, golfers want to golf or work at skills needed
to improve their game year round. The top professional golfers
of the modern era are extremely strong, flexible, and fit. They
work out year-round to maintain their "fitness edge".
The casual or scratch golfer is looking for the same experience.
Golf fitness training factors like strength, flexibility, balance,
endurance, nutrition, stability, power, vision and posture all
influence the body's mechanics.
A golf fitness training physical screening process should measure
a golfer's ability to generate and transfer speed and determine
the most efficient energy transfer throughout the body. The golf
fitness training program should then isolate any physical limitations,
correlate these findings to the golfer's swing technique and result
in a custom-conditioning program.
Key Point: Golf fitness training programs should
be interactive and intimate. Golf fitness training should include
assessment testing and identifying physical limitations.
Golf Medical Therapy Training
The most extreme are of golf training is a medical procedure
to correct a chronic or acute issue. True story: I once trained
a golf pro from a private country club who had been diagnosed
with a grade 2 bilateral inguinal hernia, forgot to put it on
his medical history form and when discovered, announced he was
fine to train and was waiting until the end of the season for
the medical procedure. If you're a golf medical professional,
I'm sure you've got your fair share of bizarre golf stories. To
that point, even as a golf lesson pro, never assume you're instructing
a perfectly healthy individual.
And now back to the golf medical professional therapy, although
it's the most drastic off-season process, it's very common. Joint
replacements, extensive MRI testing, nuclear die testing and more
can all be scheduled with both the procedure and recover period,
as overseen by a certified golf medical professional, with relative
accuracy.
Key Point: Allow for extra recovery time, in
the even the medical professional finds more extensive irregularities
in the medical condition, or rehabilitation has a set-back. Also,
because this process tends to affect daily living functions, get
multiple opinions before continuing.
